Getting Started

MILITARY STUDENT OFFICE

GETTING STARTED

STEP 1: ESTABLISH YOUR BENEFITS

You must first determine what your benefits will be. If you are a Veteran using one of the GI Bills®, you must first select which benefit you will use. Then you must apply for that benefit using the Veterans On-line Application (VONAPP) Within about six weeks you should receive your Certificate of Eligibility. You don’t have to wait to begin your studies. Coleman will let you start before you have received this Certificate.

If you are active duty, you can apply for Tuition Assistance with your post Education Service Officer to determine your eligibility. Military students using Tuition Assistance can also use “Top-up” which allows VA to reimburse an individual for all or a portion of the charges for a course or courses that are not reimbursed under certain military education programs.

STEP 2: SELECT YOUR PROGRAM OF STUDY

Decide what type of program interests you. Focus on your long term career objectives and select an area that will inspire you. Our Admissions Department can help with this selection. You may also want to talk to a program Dean to determine your options within a particular field. The Military Student Office can help you set up these appointments.

STEP 3: GET CREDIT FOR PRIOR WORK

We want you to get credit for your prior work. We have programs for credit by examination, transfer credits from other schools, and credit for work experience. The Military Student Office can help you determine how to apply this prior work to the program of study which you have selected. As soon this prior credit has been established, we can set up a program of study specifically for you. Our goal is to help you get your degree as quickly as possible.

STEP 4: ENROLL AND START CLASSES

The Military Student Office can help you get started with your education at Coleman. We will help you navigate the benefits application process. We will help you select your program of study. We will help you get credit for prior work. We will help you complete the enrollment forms and make arrangements with the Business Office. Finally, we will help you cope with the stress of academic life. Give us a call and get your academic program started today.

GETTING CREDIT FOR PRIOR LEARNING

Want to earn a degree or a certificate to help advance your military career or prepare for your transition to a new profession in the civilian workforce? Coleman has a path for you and we are committed to your success! We specialize in turning your military training and learning into college level credit. We apply your learning to meaningful 100% fully online degrees such as:

  • Business Administration
  • Culinary Arts and Hospitality Management
  • Health Sciences
  • Computer Science and Information Technology
  • Nursing
  • Combine your credit for prior learning with our convenient 5 and 10 week terms and depending on your rank and military occupation, classification or specialty and you could finish your Associates degree in as few as 9 courses or your bachelors degree in as few as 14 courses.

Coleman University has established a comprehensive credit for prior learning program that identifies and awards useable university credit for everything you have learned through your military training and experience. We use the Council on Adult and Experiential Learning (CAEL) as well as the American Council on Education (ACE) processes and recommendations, as well as our own highly experienced faculty to determine how your learning articulates into credit at Coleman University. You can use these programs for up to 75% of your undergraduate degree and 50% of your graduate degree. Our goal is to help you complete your education as quickly as possible by allowing you to build on your military background.

CREDIT BY EXAMINATION

Credits are accepted from AARTS, SMART, CCAF, ACE, DANTES, CLEP exams.

TRANSFER CREDITS

Transfer credits are accepted from accredited institutions of higher education. Since Coleman is a member of the Services Members Opportunities College (SOC) program, we will accept credits from all other member schools. Courses transferred must map into the degree that you have selected and meet the minimum academic requirements for transfer.

PRIOR LEARNING ASSESSMENT

Prior Learning Assessment {PLA) can be used to grant credit for military work experience or for non-accredited military training programs. The PLA translates what you have learned into specific course learning outcomes to determine equivalency. We will use your JST to get the process started! You can start your bachelors degree at Coleman and earn your associate’s along the way or even head all the way to the Masters degree without skipping a beat!

We have reviewed all of the leadership and management training and skills that you have attained and we have turned this into credit that is easily applied at the associates, bachelors and masters degree levels. Your credit counts toward your core and your elective requirements! Regardless if you are Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines or Coast Guard – we have reviewed your military learning and fully articulated it into University Credit.

In addition – we will look at your MOS, classification, and other training for specific credits to speed your time to your degree.

We provide college credit all the way through the Master’s Degree Level! Send us your JST and we will do a personalized and no cost or obligation review of your military learning.

JOINT SERVICES TRANSCRIPT CHECK WIZARD

To find the credits that apply to YOU select your service branch, occupation held, pay grade, plus add any additional military schools attended! If you have had various occupations throughout your service, you can select as many occupations as needed. You can also choose to search for your occupation, or select from the list in the drop-down menu.

You will need to select each occupation or classification individually against the various academic programs that you are considering. You can do multiple searches for as many occupations or classifications that you want to review.

You will also need to select any non MOS or classification producing schools against the various academic programs that you are considering.

Once you have a good idea of which program you want to pursue – submit your JST to Coleman University and we will provide a comprehensive no cost and no obligation review of your credits! We are ready when you are!
